4 ways to strengthen teacher collaboration
Written by Macey Conlan
Teaching can sometimes feel isolating, especially in elementary schools where educators often face unique challenges in their classrooms. However, when we foster a collaborative environment, everything becomes more manageable. Over the years, I’ve discovered that true collaboration isn’t just about splitting up responsibilities—it’s about supporting one another, sharing challenges, and working together to find data-driven solutions. Below are a few key ways my team and I have built stronger connections and enhanced our teaching practices through effective collaboration.
one: start with emotional check-ins
One of the best ways to build strong collaboration is by checking in with each other emotionally. Teaching can be overwhelming, and knowing someone understands what you’re going through makes all the difference. I’ve found that starting team meetings with a quick “How are you really doing?” opens the door for honesty and connection.
two: create a checklist of needs
Sometimes, it’s hard to ask for help, but having a simple checklist of what you need—whether it’s lesson materials, extra support with a student, or just a pep talk—makes it easier. My team and I started doing this, and it’s been a game changer. It helps everyone know exactly where we can step in and support.
three: communicate openly and often
Collaboration thrives on open communication. The more we talk, the better we understand each other’s needs and can offer real support. Weekly check-ins or quick touch-bases go a long way in keeping everyone on the same page.
four: celebrate the small wins
Finally, remember to celebrate the little victories. Collaboration thrives on positivity. Whether it’s tackling a tough lesson or managing a challenging student, recognizing those moments keeps morale high. It’s these small wins that remind us why we teach—and why we need each other.
